The value of a conversation – finding the right client-designer match

I learned from a really smart marketing guru many years ago —  if someone really needs your services they are willing to have a conversation with you.

If prospects are price shopping, they are likely looking for the cheapest deal. I can say with certainty that the “really concerned about the money clients” typically demand a lot of your time for very little return – they expect a first-class flight to Paris for the price of a bus ticket to Bakersfield. Sorry folks, this is my business – I have a mortgage and my kids like to eat regularly.

(Sigh.)

I can learn a lot about someone’s business by asking questions. I have been around the block long enough to know that giving someone a price before I have at least some of these answers usually means the prospect will move on and continue price shopping. EVERYONE thinks marketing and printing is too expensive are not focused on brand building and the end result: The value of the long-term or repeat customers the marketing campaign will bring.

The clients I love to work with have plans…sales goals, presentations to create, and customers to service. They hire me to get them to their end goal. They are always price conscious, but they realize marketing is an investment in their business.

When meeting someone new at a networking event this is the first question I am asked when handing out my business card.

When I answer “Graphic Design and Marketing”, I have found that most of the time people then ask a follow up question – “So what does that mean?” or they comment, “How Fun!”. Don’t get me wrong, I love what I do, but it is serious business. I wear many hats, of which only some include actual graphic design. When describing my business, I focus on how we help business owners, which seems to be easier for people to digest.

Unique Business Cards

Unique business cards can be a very important part of marketing your business.

Don’t forget the basic elements that every card needs:

  • Your Name
  • Your Business Name
  • Your business logo
  • Phone Number
  • Email Address
  • Website Address
  • 3 bullet points that identify your unique selling points

Tip for new business owners: If you do not have a business logo, that is ok. Business cards are cheap, and the sooner you have cards in your hand, the sooner you can hand them out! A great logo can take time to develop, you don’t want to rush the process.

In the business-to-business world of marketing, a lot of businesses are built on word of mouth marketing by attending networking events and handing out business cards. When you have attended events in your area  consistently, you will begin to meet people who know people you know. Reminding them of your brand with a nicely designed business card builds brand recognition. Sometimes people find it easier to remember what company you are with than your name.

If you work for a large scale corporation, find ways to personalize your card/contact info so that people can get a hold of you directly. Nothing is worse than a prospect not being able to find you in a directory of 30 other agents.

Do you attend networking events? When you are looking to make a good first impression, there is nothing like putting a little piece of your marketing in someone’s hand. Don’t forget to get a card from all the people you meet and follow up with them. You never know who they might know.
